Environmental efficiency is one of the most important topics that link economic performance to environmental performance, and a guide for the government and decision-makers to evaluate the environmental efficiency of the country's economic activity, and to identify the extent of the country's orientation towards achieving green growth; and to encourage fundamental changes in the way production is carried out at the national level and how resources are consumed. In addition to benefiting from these indicators to identify the environmental efficiency of economic and social policies related to environmental sustainability. The concept of environmental efficiency gained international attention in the 1990s, when both the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) incorporated the concept of environmental efficiency into their programs and began to promote its implementation. The World Business Council for Sustainable Development has launched environmental efficiency as a tool to link business to sustainable development. The purpose of environmental efficiency was to be a practical approach for the business sector to contribute to sustainable development, by seeking to achieve long-term profits through the integration of activities that respect the Earth's carrying capacity. Since then, many companies have adopted the concept of environmental efficiency, which has proven to be a practical tool for enhancing both economic and environmental benefits. Therefore, environmental efficiency has been used not only at the micro level, but has also extended to the macro level as a practical tool that is useful for comparison over time or with other countries. This pilot test of environmental efficiency indicators aims to support the sustainable development plan in Egypt, by analyzing the environmental performance of economic activity to identify the progress or delay in achieving green growth. These indicators provide continuous evaluation of sustainable development, and contribute to the development of the performance of the public and private sectors and civil society in order to improve environmental efficiency. The environmental efficiency index was designed to identify the environmental efficiency of growth by measuring the efficiency of economic activity in terms of consumption and production (use of natural resources and raw materials).
