This study seeks to benefit from the experience of number of Eastern European countries in applying the mechanisms of direct democracy, aiming to increase the effective participation of citizens in public affairs. The study concluded that it is important to enhance transparency and the right of information circulation as two basic requirements for the successful application of direct democracy mechanisms. The study also concluded that a number of direct democracy mechanisms can be applied as means to support citizen participation in political and administrative reform efforts in the Arab Republic of Egypt, as the current constitution contains many articles that can contribute in activating local participation through the implementation of the various main mechanisms of direct democracy.
