The impact of the strategic rapprochement between Russia and China on the structure of the international system

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of the strategic convergence between Russia and China on the structure of the international system. The study used the realist approach and its assumptions about the balance of power, the balance of threat, and the balance of interests to explain rapprochement between Russia and China, and their quest to eliminate American hegemony and unipolarity. The study also used the approach of the national interest on the basis that the national interests of both Russia and China require them to increase and strengthen cooperation, in the hope of confronting American influence, and in search of a multilateral international system. The study revolved around the hypothesis that “there is a positive relationship between the growing Russian-Chinese convergence and the possibility of affecting the structure of the international system by balancing their power with that of the United States. The study concluded that despite the accelerating strategic convergence between Russia and China, there are obstacles that prevent Impact on the structure of the international system.
