Abstract

This study aimed to discuss the aspects of continuity and change in British foreign policy toward Europe since Brexit and its repercussions on British foreign policy towards European Union at the end of 2020, after the end of Prime Minister Theresa May government and Boris Johnson took over as prime minister during 2019. This study seeks to investigate the extent of variation in British foreign policy, and be aware about which considerations - European or Atlantic - were inclined towards British foreign policy.
For this purpose, the study relied mainly on the inductive approach, which is based on observing the reality, with the aim of recording its events, and then reaching objective results about it, by describing the reality in the light of the available information and knowing the determinants of British foreign policy towards Europe at the external and internal levels. In order to reach conclusions regarding British foreign policy towards the European Union.
Finally, this study concluded that Britain could not decide its position in world politics. In the event of its close compromise with USA, Britain runs the risk of being drawn into the policies controlled by the USA. So, in the case of reconciliation with European Union, it exposes it to the risk of engaging in a joint decision-making process that may lead to the weakening of its sovereignty. The future direction could witness important shifts in the British trends, swinging between Atlantic or European aspirations according to its interests and goals in light of the events and developments that the world will witness in the future.
