Challenging the local and regional security of the African Sahel countries

Abstract

The Sahel countries face a set of complex security challenges that affect their local and regional stability, which is evident through armed conflicts, the spread of extremist groups and the increase in illegal immigration. The armed conflicts witnessed in the Sahel region due to tribal and political misunderstandings, which lead to the dismantling of the social fabric and the increase in poverty, as well as some ambiguous circumstances, including extremist terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda, ISIS, Boko Haram and other jihadist groups to expand their influence in the coastal region, exploiting the weakness of local governments and the spread of corruption. Illegal immigration is one of the most prominent challenges in the Sahel countries, as many individuals flee harsh living conditions, which leads to the exacerbation of humanitarian crises and political instability suffered by many Sahel countries, which hinders development efforts and weakens the ability to confront security challenges. The need for regional and international cooperation between the Sahel countries and the international community is essential to confront these challenges, and this requires comprehensive strategies that combine security and development.
The research relied on the descriptive and historical approach as the most appropriate approaches to implement such research that discusses the challenges of security and conflicts in the countries of the African Sahel.
