Abstract

The study examines Egypt's foreign policy towards the geopolitical issues of South Sudan. It is structured into two main sections. The first section discusses the key geopolitical issues in South Sudan, including internal conflicts and their impact on regional stability, as well as water-related concerns, particularly South Sudan’s role as a riparian state of the Nile River and the implications of dam projects on Egypt’s water security. Additionally, the study highlights regional and international interventions in South Sudan, such as the roles of Ethiopia and Sudan, and their impact on Egypt’s strategic calculations.

The second section focuses on Egypt’s foreign policy stance towards South Sudan’s issues. It analyzes Egypt’s position on internal conflicts and its role in supporting stability. Furthermore, it sheds light on Egypt’s strategies for cooperation with South Sudan in water projects and infrastructure development, utilizing development as a tool to strengthen bilateral relations.

The study concludes that the relationship between Egypt and South Sudan is not merely a bilateral one based on mutual interests, but rather represents a model of regional cooperation that serves broader concerns, including the stability of the East African region as a whole. The study emphasizes that strengthening and developing these relations is a key factor in understanding and analyzing Egypt’s foreign policy towards South Sudan, especially in light of the regional and international geopolitical shifts that have influenced the area over the past decade.
