This study examines the theory of nuclear deterrence: its hypotheses, applications, and conclusions, in addition to its critics. Furthermore, the study will also examine any new theoretical developments in this field. In general, two basic arguments in the field of nuclear deterrence theory and international relation will be discussed: 1. The theory of nuclear deterrence is still active and that States with such weapons can deter others from using it against them. 2. With the development of international relations, the theory is no longer applicable, and further readings of international relations must be sought in light of the accelerated nuclear proliferation. It is concluded that deterrence theory is still valid in the 21st century but needs to expand in order to include nuclear disarmament.
